Buddha Says - Reincarnation Wall / Reincarnation Tower

YEAR: 2008

MATERIAL: Paint, sheetrock, zip-lock bags, visitors' DNA

SIZE: 190.5 x 190.5 x 312 cm

In this work, I carved hundreds of a repeated image of a sitting Buddha on the walls. What's inside of the walls has revealed as I carved the images. It was like to reveal cycles of that Buddha figure's life. I then carefully collected the cut-off scraps and saved them in a small zip-lock bag under that carved image. Each image therefor became a visual narrative on its own with its own story, a story left up to the viewer to discern.

Visitors can enter the box or, in anther version of this piece, can walk to the back side of this piece. They can leave their DNA such as a piece of nail or hair inside a small zip-lock bag attached on the wall. As this piece has exhibited in New York and Philadelphia, then came to Bejing, It has collected many people's DNA. These DNA are stored in these bags, became the evidence of each visitor's reincarnation.
